Weight Watchers Gets It Wrong with Mini Caramel Apple Pops

What's the point, Weight Watchers?
So I try not to be too shocked over what passes as sound diet and nutrition advice, but I almost fell off my chair when I saw a video tutorial on the Weight Watchers Facebook page a few days ago on how to make mini caramel apple pops.

I could feel my insulin spike just watching it.

Basically, the  Points People had you paring an apple, scooping out little balls of flesh, sticking lollipop sticks in them, and dipping them into melted caramel. And like all cute little things, these mini caramel apple pops were darling. But deceptive.

The video had almost a million hits as of this morning, and the people commenting had loaded of questions -- like what kind of caramels should they use and how many points were in each pop. The Weight Watchers social media person was evasive on the latter, saying you had to log in to the company's Etools app.Which ticked a few people off.

But what they really should have been ticked off about is that Weight Watchers was not promoting new habits of eating, just taking a Halloween staple, miniaturizing it and calling it diet food.

One of the interesting things I learned on Medifast is that even though fruit is healthy, it's full of sugar. My body handles the sugar from fruit much better when I combine it with a more protein-packed food like nuts, Greek yogurt or cheese.

Just one piece of caramel has 6.6 grams of sugar and less than a gram of protein. And even if you used sugar-free caramel, you would still have all the apple sugar to deal with.

A typical large apple has 23 grams of sugar; and without a protein chaperone to slow down its absorption into the blood stream, your blood sugar levels are likely to go for a little roller coaster ride.

Learning how to make little candy covered apple pops will not help you maintain your ideal body weight once you reach your goal because you will stop counting points and just eat a bunch of them.

Learning how to eat apples with protein, however, is one of the lifelong habits I learned from doing the Medifast Take Shape for Life Program, a more sophisticated approach to healthy eating that has helped me maintain my ideal weight for almost a year.

You can purchase Medifast replacement meals directly from Medifast Centers, the Medifast website or -- for less cost -- through the co-branded website of a Medifast TSFL health coach. Medifast does not recommend purchasing its products from third party vendors, but if you choose to do so, you can find them on both Amazon and eBay.
